in Maine,” head to Five Islands Lobster Co.
This lobster shack, located on a wharf in the Five Islands fishing
village of Georgetown Island, is truly one of the most picturesque spots
anywhere on the coast. Dinners can feast on fresh lobster while taking in
360-degree views of the five pine-shrouded islands of Sheepscot Bay.
But this lobster shack isn’t just about the views, the food at Five Islands is fame-worthy as well. The waters here are some of the deepest and coldest on the coast, which makes for extremely flavorful lobsters. You can choose these lobsters directly from a tank before having them boiled up with corn on the cob and new potatoes (all cooked in the same water, enhancing the flavour). Lobster rolls are served with a toasted bun, only claw meat and, as described by TV chef Andrew Zimmern, “just a gloss, a whisper, a gentle zephyr of mayo.”
Beyond lobster, Five Islands offer the “best fried clams in Maine” according to Downeast Magazine, as well as a range of delicious, hand-breaded foods. They also make their own sauces, including a tartar sauce with fresh dill and capers and a cilantro mayo which has earned near legendary status and goes great with their haddock, crabcakes and scallops. There is no indoor seating or alcohol served so you’ll need to BYOB and BYOS’s (bring your own sunblock and/or sweater) but that all just adds to the authentic Maine lobster shack experience, an experience which has led The Travel Channel to name Five Islands one of the top 101 places in the world to chow down.
